The Original Insomniac

Its all coming together. Yet another night of waking up at 3 a.m. and tossing and turning, trying not to wake up the wife. I used to sleep well when I was a kid. I think my 7 years of surgical training changed everything, and I still have not recovered. I don't remember a night of uninterrupted sleep. During your training years in surgery, you are constantly woken up at night with pages from nurses etc. Even now that I am in private practice, I still have a tough time falling back asleep if I am woken up by a call from a patient or nurse. But it's mostly just waking up spontaneously at 2-3 a.m., tossing and turning for 30 minutes before I get up. There are usually a thousand thoughts flying through my head when I wake up, and I cannot seem to get them to stop. I guess I need to see a sleep specialist. Actually, I need to dedicate myself to meditation, which seems to help. Don't know much about the Buddhist religion, but I must admit that meditation really does help calm the mind. I initially thought all that meditation crap was just that....crap. But it does change your perspective on daily living. See my other blog http://eckharttolle-consciousness.blogspot.com/. I must be getting soft in the head as I get older! I actually like reading that kind of stuff now. Oh well, time to meditate and then go back to bed. It's 3.35 a.m.
